Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about backflow testing, installation, and compliance in Northern California.
Backflow Testing
What is a backflow preventer and why does it need to be tested?
A backflow preventer is a mechanical device that stops contaminated water from flowing backward into the public water supply. California law requires annual testing by a certified tester to ensure the device is functioning correctly and protecting public health.
How often does my backflow preventer need to be tested?
Most water districts in California require annual testing. You will typically receive a notice from your water district when a test is due. We can also set up reminders so you never miss a deadline.
How long does a backflow test take?
A standard backflow test takes approximately 30–60 minutes depending on the number and type of devices on your property. We handle all paperwork and submit results directly to your water district.
Will my water be shut off during the test?
There will be a brief water interruption — usually just a few minutes — while we isolate and test the device. We coordinate with you in advance to minimize any disruption.
Installation & Repair
What types of backflow preventers do you install?
We install all major types including Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) assemblies, Double Check Valve (DCV) assemblies, Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB), and Atmospheric Vacuum Breakers (AVB) for both residential and commercial applications.
My backflow preventer failed its test — what happens next?
If your device fails, we can repair or replace it on the spot in most cases. We carry common parts and assemblies on our service vehicles. Once repaired, we retest and submit the passing results to your water district.
Do you work on fire suppression backflow preventers?
Yes. We service backflow prevention devices on fire sprinkler systems, irrigation systems, commercial boilers, and all other hazard types.
Compliance & Regulations
What happens if I don't get my backflow preventer tested?
Failure to test can result in fines from your water district and, in some cases, water service interruption. We help you stay compliant and avoid penalties.
Are your technicians certified?
Yes. All of our testers are certified by the State of California under the Cross-Connection Control Specialist program and hold current certifications with the American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA).
Do you submit test reports to the water district for me?
Absolutely. We handle all reporting directly with your water district so you don't have to worry about paperwork or deadlines.
